An Early Introduction
1994 - the year Friends aired their pilot episode, Woodstock celebrated its 25th anniversary, and most relevantly in the case of this story, the year Tim McGraw and Faith Hill first met in country music's heart and home, Nashville Tennessee. Back then, Faith (a recent divorcee after her six year long marriage) and Tim (who at the time was in a relationship with Kristine Donahue) were both awaiting their musical breakouts.
Considering the circumstances at the time, it's understandable that the two didn’t pursue a romantic relationship. However, their introduction must’ve left an impact on one another as we’ll see in the years to come.
Fans Were Surprised When They Went on Tour Together
While little is known about the contact kept between the two since their initial introduction, we do know that in 1996, a mere two years later, the two would join forces as the headliners of a dual tour called ‘Spontaneous Combustion’. This led to the two spending a great deal of time together.
Before the tour, the two remained dedicated to their respective partners (Tim and Kristine still going strong and Faith engaged to Scott Hendricks) and no romance seemed to be blossoming as of yet. Nonetheless, both their musical and romantic chemistry would only grow stronger as their tour started.
A Dynamic Duo on Tour
While fans didn't think much of the pair at first, once their joint tour started there was no denying the chemistry they shared on stage. They were a dynamic musical duo and it wasn't hard to see why they were attracted to one another's endearing personalities. Their close quarters and extensive time spent together on tour only brought the two closer.
Unfortunately for their romance, both were dedicated to their individual partners and decisions regarding their attraction to one another had to be made. This situation left Faith in a particular state of confusion regarding the future of her love-life.
Just One Kiss - But She Was Still Engaged to Someone Else
Amidst the conflicting emotions and Faith’s indecision, she received an invite into Tim’s Dressing room one night after a show. As we know, the two had only grown closer during their time on tour and the amorous tension only grew stronger with each passing day. It was this particular night in Tims dressing room that he simply couldn’t hold himself back anymore.
The two shared a passionate first kiss and one thing was for certain, Faith had made her decision. With a connection like that of her and Tim, she decided to end her engagement with Scott and take things with Tim a step further.
Appearances Are Everything
As the tour progressed so did the dynamic relationship of Tim and Faith, their connection only deepening as the days and performances passed. Dedicated fans kept a key eye on the two from the moment they set foot on their first stage, but watchful eyes only grew once their relationship was privately made official.
After a few months of them officially being together, they made their first public appearance as a couple at the Andre Aggasi’s Grand Slam for Children in mid 1996. Since this first official appearance, fans were more dedicated than ever to their relationship.
Judging Eyes
Upon presenting their relationship to the public, there was a divide in support toward the relationship. More than half of the fans were over the moon but there were the fair few who simply had to give their two cents regarding the respective relationship statuses of the couple at the start of their relationship. There was particular scrutiny toward Faith regarding her disengaging with partner Scott Hendricks.
However, she bravely stood up for herself saying that she couldn’t control whether or not people would judge her but added that she wasn’t about to let Tim slip out of her hands.
Baby, I'm Yours
1996 provided an avalanche of exciting news for the couple. Not only did they go through the whole motions and early excitement of a relationship, the two were now preparing to be a family as the couple found out they were expecting a baby. While this news came as a big surprise considering the recency of their relationship, the couple happily showed off Faith's beautiful baby bump across red carpets and fans simply knew Faith would be an excellent mother.
There was only one thing Tim was missing from this relationship: a diamond ring and a marriage certificate. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves.
A Series of Public Affairs
With a baby on the way and a trail of several romantic public displays within the span of a year, Tim knew he wanted to make Faith, the love of his life, his wife. And with their history, what better way to do it than in front of an entire audience of dedicated fans. One night, after a wonderful performance by Faith, Tim wanted to display his love and dedication in the most public way possible.
After her final song, he got up on stage, got down on one knee, and popped the big question, stating how dedicated he was to their relationship.
"I Do"
Tim and Faiths relationship was nothing if not one surprise after another and this stayed true with their wedding. A pair of pioneers for their time, their holy matrimony helped in setting the trend of surprise weddings. Faith and Tim invited their friends and family to Tim's hometown in Louisiana for a supposed softball game and concert.
However, to everyone's surprise this little outing turned out to be a bohemian wedding of the decade with Faith barefoot and in a white dress and Tim in a pair of blue jeans under an old oak tree. What a beautiful way to say “I do”.
Confronting the Past
Adoption can often be a tricky subject to deal with, but it’s something of a recurring theme in the story of Hill and McGraw. With the pair’s relationship as husband and wife now firmly established within the timeline of our story, let’s examine Hill’s past. Although she had never been shy about the fact that she was adopted, you could probably imagine why someone might approach the subject with some trepidation, particularly when it comes to discussion surrounding one’s birth parents.
Despite this, Hill later met her biological mother, and though the meeting was surely an emotional affair, she only had positive comments to offer, saying: “The first time I met (my birth mother), I just stared at her. I'd never seen anyone that looked anything like me. It was the awe of seeing someone you came from. It fills something.”
Welcome to the World
Now, let’s get back to where we left off in 1997. You may remember that, during one of the couple’s first public appearances together, Hill was sporting a rather prominent baby belly. Even in her beautiful white dress, the bump was clearly evident, and many eagerly anticipated the arrival of Hill and McGraw’s first child together. Finally, in May of 1997, the couple welcomed their bundle of joy to the world: a little girl named Gracie Katherine.
Naturally, balancing a singing career with your responsibilities as a mother is difficult, so Hill took some time off to focus on her little girl.
Plans for a Second
Being a new mother isn’t easy, though some definitely have a penchant for motherhood. By all accounts, Hill is one of those people, and her ability to manage both her career and her household are truly admirable. Therefore, it should come as no surprise to learn that, almost as soon as their first child was born, Hill and McGraw were eager to have another.
When you look back on their relationship dynamics, it makes complete sense. The pair spent all their time together, both on-stage and off. They even named their tour bus the “love bus” - and what happens there stays between them.
A Mother’s Love
As mentioned, Hill wasn’t about to shirk her motherly duties off. Though she had a hugely successful career to maintain, she always put the wellbeing and happiness of her child first and foremost. As mentioned, motherhood just comes easy for some people! And though many celebrities would prefer to maintain a cool, calm, and collected facade, Hill never hesitated to express her excitement at becoming a mother.
In fact, it went deeper than that. Not only was Hill openly elated to be a mother, it seemed to be her life’s greatest calling. She described losing her family as her worst fear, saying: “Being without my family ... I can't even say it because it makes me cry.”
A Return to Tour - And Ready for Baby #2
Now that the couple had a child, the pair were forced to work on their priorities. Though she had taken some time off, Hill was eager to keep her career going, and toured extensively after her child was born, and after she had settled into her role as a mother. McGraw, meanwhile, had never really stopped touring. This was their job as musicians, after all. However, after four years, the couple hitched their spurs once more - and also welcomed their second child.
This brief period of rest allowed the couple to work on their household and ensure the wellbeing of both their children. And when they were finally ready to make a comeback, they knew they had to do it in a big way - which is why they released a duet, as husband and wife.
It’s Your Love
The return of both Hill and McGraw to the music scene was highly anticipated. No one was sure what, exactly, the two had in store for them. Would they both resume their solo careers? Would they immediately hit the road again, after all this time? Eventually, the couple released a duet called “It’s Your Love”. For a pair of starry-eyed lovers like these two, the idea to release a duet was obvious - in fact, it’s amazing that it didn’t happen sooner!
The song was immediately successful, and stayed at the top of the charts for six straight weeks, winning several awards at the Academy of Country Music Awards. But it was so much more than just a money-making hit for them - when they sang it together, they sang as though nobody else was watching.
A New Direction
Now, reception towards both Hill and McGraw hadn’t soured during their time away, and the release of “It’s Your Love” only further cemented their careers. But neither of them were one-trick ponies. After all, plenty of artists come along and release one good song before their career flounders - there’s a reason for the term “one-hit-wonder”, after all. With that being said, you can imagine how eager the pair were to test the limits of their warm reception.
It was a bold move, but towards the turn of the millennium, Hill released a new, self-titled album. Not only did she demonstrate her tremendous singing abilities, she also imbued her music with an undeniable pop sound. It was a risk - but it paid off.
The Future
The year 2000 loomed ahead of the young couple. They already had two children, and two very successful careers. With so much accomplishment in so short a time frame, fans could only wonder what they would do next. Would they slow down for good, devoting more and more time to their two children? Or would they keep their careers going at full speed ahead? As it turned out, neither McGraw or Hill would keep their plans for the future private.
In fact, McGraw was especially unreserved in his expectations for the future. “Ideally, we'd love five kids,” McGraw said, and noted how he had always wanted boys too.
Going on Tour
By the time 2000 finally rolled around, many noted that - though Hill and McGraw had already been together for years at this point - the two had never actually gone on tour together. Releasing a duet was one thing, but spending weeks and months on the road together was another thing entirely. And so, the couple announced their Soul2Soul tour which would showcase their power as a duet. As if to further emphasize how much this tour meant to them, they brought one of their daughters along too.
By their own admission, the couple loved touring together. But we must remember that they occupy a world of celebrities, so the rumor mill never stops turning. Talk of an imminent separation was in the air.
The Rumor Mill
Celebrity gossip is one of our modern society’s basest forms of entertainment. It is a constantly moving machine built on rumors, hearsay, and outright lies. Most people know this - and they perpetuate it anyway. Celebrity couples, especially, are always held under an intense microscope. Nobody wants to believe in fairy tale endings - surely, there must be some crack in the facade that we may deepen.
Indeed, around this time, the rumors hounding Hill and McGraw were becoming incessant and increasingly far-fetched. Hill was especially bothered by them.
Proving Their Love
Despite the constant rumors, stories, and lies that seemed to follow them wherever they went, Hill and McGraw never buckled under the pressure. In fact, it’s entirely possible that all the gossip actually strengthened their bond - by forcing the couple to defend their relationship, everyone would see just how much they meant to one another. In interview after interview, neither Hill or McGraw would shrink from a chance to profess their love for their partner.
"Tim has given me confidence and strength and my foundation. He makes me feel like I can conquer the world,” Hill said in an interview. And clearly, their love was stronger than ever, because in 2001, they welcomed their third child into the world.
Shadow of the Father
For those who don’t know, Tim McGraw is the son of Tug McGraw, a professional baseball player. Like many athletes, the elder McGraw had a restless energy and a fierceness that could sometimes get him into trouble. He would only meet his son when the younger McGraw was 11, but as Tim has said himself, he has inherited much of his father’s attitude and demeanour - which could sometimes cause problems.
Fortunately, the younger McGraw met the love of his life, who was able to rein in some of his more aggressive behaviours. “...when I met Faith, I knew I needed her in my life-to keep me stable, solid and on track.”
Defending Her Honor
It’s probably a good thing for all the couple’s detractors that Hill has been such a good influence on McGraw. Remember that celebrities face constant harassment and pressure, and the country music scene is no different. All the gossip was par for the course, but that didn’t mean they had to like it. Hill, especially, would often find herself the target of harassment and criticism (much of it unfounded), but dealt with it fairly.
McGraw, on the other hand, seemed more offended than she did. He mentioned once that he would like to punch his wife’s detractors in the nose. And anyone who has had to defend their partner’s honor before can probably relate.
Patriotism at It's Finest
It’s almost a cliche at this point to comment on the inherent patriotism of country music. As a genre, country music harkens back to America’s fabled and mythological past, making the past come alive through its use of archetypes and symbols, which are then applied to the mundane reality of the present. In other words, all country musicians are patriots to some extent. And indeed, neither Hill or McGraw are exceptions to that rule.
In particular, the couple are particularly fond of the United States Armed Forces. In 2003, they were invited to perform for the USAF at Fort Bragg in North Carolina, an opportunity they could not pass up.
Tim Realized He Had a Drinking Problem
We’ve already mentioned that country music often makes use of common symbols and themes to evoke a certain period or sense of nostalgia. One such motif is whiskey, and other alcoholic drinks. It conjures up images of smoky bar rooms and nights on the prairie, and the genre would feel incomplete without it. But as the old saying goes, art imitates life, and sometimes, it’s the other way around.
McGraw has performed hundreds of shows over the span of his career, often under the influence of a good drink. While he rarely let it get the better of him, there came a time when he knew that he had a problem - and Hill was right there to put him in his place.
At a Crossroads
Alcoholism, drug abuse, and other forms of addiction are terrible things that not only affect the addict, but the addict’s friends, family, and loved ones as well. Often these are the very same people that would make up their support system; indeed, many former addicts claim that they may not have been able to beat their problems without the love and support of their family. But these people have breaking points too.
Hill was no different. Though she loved her husband, she had to lay down the law, and told him that if he didn’t beat his addiction she would be forced to leave. That might have been exactly the kind of wake-up call McGraw needed.
Policy of Honesty
Hill and McGraw first got together in the 90s, almost three decades ago to this day. During that time, they’ve shared children, faced enormous career pressure, and battled an addiction. Many marriages have been shattered by less. And yet, despite some of the trials and tribulations they have had to work through, Hill and McGraw are as starry-eyed today as they were when they first met.
By McGraw’s own account, the secret to their success is communication. In his own words, he describes how easy it is for him and Hill to express their feelings to one another.
Time Together
Of course, communication will only take you so far. There are other aspects of a marriage that must be maintained in order to ensure its longevity. Fortunately, Hill and McGraw are keenly aware of this. Though fame and fortune have spelt the downfall of many relationships in the entertainment industry, their respective careers actually allow them to spend even more time together.
For example, McGraw was featured in an acting role in The Blind Side. Though this would normally spell a few weeks away from his family and beloved wife, Hill actually contributed to the film’s soundtrack, which allowed the two to stay close.
A Perfect Fit
The Blind Side was an immediate success when it released in 2009, and is still excitedly discussed today. When McGraw signed on for the role of Sean Tuohy (husband of Sandra Bullock’s character, Leigh Anne Tuohy), he had already been in several films already, but this one gave him the opportunity to play a character that was a little closer to home - in more ways than one.
McGraw came from a fairly dysfunctional household that set within him a desire for a stable family life. His character in The Blind Side reflects this, which is why he was so excited to play the role.
An Inspiration to Each Other
The best and strongest couples are made up of people who are able to bring out the best in each other. McGraw was playing a character that reflected his own strengths as a husband and father, qualities which were no doubt amplified by his lovely wife. But it works both ways as well. Indeed, Hill often finds herself drawing inspiration from her husband, admiring his assertiveness and parenting abilities.
Of course, it seems that no one is allowed to be happy in the entertainment industry. And despite being stronger than ever, the couple would soon face severe scrutiny once more.
Wrong Kind of Attention
On February 5th, 2013, McGraw released his twelfth studio album, Two Lanes of Freedom. The record featured a guest appearance from Taylor Swift, was a critical and commercial success, and seemed to indicate that McGraw’s career was at no risk of floundering. Yet for some reason, it also got the gossip mill turning once more, and rumors began to abound that all was not well in paradise.
Of course, these rumors were completely unfounded and absurd. Hill and McGraw were used to it at this point, however, expressing frustration but ultimately letting all of it roll off their backs.
All Grown Up
By now, Hill and McGraw had three children whom they loved dearly. And as any parent will tell you, one of the hardest things you’ll have to deal with is your child leaving home. When it came time for their eldest to go off to college, Hill and McGraw were sad to see their baby leave, but proud of the amazing woman she would one day become.
When asked about what it was like, McGraw said: "It's beautiful, and it's sad all at one time. You know, you can't wait for them to sort of see what they make of themselves and do with themselves when they get out from under your umbrella, but you're also nervous and sad because you're gonna miss 'em."
Appreciation for His Wife
Throughout his career and marriage to Hill, McGraw has never been shy about expressing his admiration and unabashed love for his wife. Indeed, during an interview with Oprah Winfrey, he explained how lucky he was to be married to her, and how lucky his children were to have her as a mother.
McGraw also further elaborated on the success of their marriage, explaining that - though they each had careers to maintain - they placed their responsibilities as spouses and parents ahead of everything else.
A Familiar Situation
Families will inevitably experience many ups and downs together. Just because someone struggles, it does not always end up in the dissolution and breakdown of their relationships. Hill and McGraw were no strangers to difficulty, and had a proven track record for dealing with it. So when Hill opened up about her brother’s own struggles with addiction, any concerns for the state of her family were quickly alleviated.
In fact, her brother stated that without the help and support of both Hill and McGraw, he may not have recovered as quickly as he did, if at all.
Following in Their Footsteps
Modern celebrity discourse often makes mention of the concept of “Nepo babies” - that is, celebrities who received their breakthrough thanks to the reputation or direct intervention of their famous parents. Since Hill and McGraw were both musicians and occasional actors, they had to assume that their children would at least entertain the idea of following in their footsteps. However, they were adamant that the children carve their own path.
“The one thing we stress is that you don't get things handed to you on a silver platter - you have to work for the things you want, they know it takes hard work,” Hill said.
Daughter Duet
By 2018, some twenty years after they were married, Hill and McGraw’s fan bases were more or less merged due to the many duets the couple had released over the years. Indeed, whenever the couple performed together, the experience was nothing short of dynamite. It had been some time since they did this, however, and many were eager to hear what the couple would produce together again.
Finally, McGraw pulled the rug out from everyone when he brought his daughter on-stage. It was a special moment, not just for fans, but for the family as well, with Hill expressing immense pride in her husband and daughter.
More Time Together
Many relationships sour the longer they go on, but McGraw and Hill have proved time and again that they are an exception to the rule. As McGraw would have it, the key to their happiness is gratitude - for each other, and for their fans. Though they have performed together for 20 years, McGraw admits that he’s still just as starry-eyed performing with her now as he was in the 90s.
"It amazes me every night, every chance I get to sing with her,” he said. He may be a tough country singer on the outside, but he’s clearly a big old softie on the inside.
